I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty much over this hot, muggy, buggy summer! But every season should be honored in some fashion, so I am celebrating this hottest time of year in the Northern Hemisphere with an original poem.
The Dog Days of Summer
When Sirius, the Dog Star, catches up to the Sun
and adds its light to the summer night,
we, here, in the Northern Half of Earth
grow slow and languid from sultry heat,
while a chorus of risen cicadas sing out,
the full-throated males loudly wooing their mates
to carry their genes for decades to come.
Our family pups spend less time out
and bark at the door to be let in
to flop on the floor beneath the fan
that moves the cool-conditioned air
and leave the night to the celestial dog
who races across the sky with the sun.
Thanks for stopping by. Y’all come back, now. (And stay as cool as you can!)
